Agenda Title:

First Reading and Recommendation of Ordinance 6083, An Ordinance to Revise the Name and Update the Mission of the Rapid City Fire Department by Amending Chapter 2.36 of the Rapid City Municipal Code

Summary:

This primary purpose of this ordinance is to update the name of the Department.  When the Fire Department started providing ambulance services, the name was changed to include its EMS function.  Despite the name change to Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the Department has continued to be referred to as the Rapid City Fire Department.  The ordinance currently references a “Bureau of Fire Prevention,” which will be re-named the “Division of Fire and Life Safety.”  This Division includes the fire marshal and inspectors, and is charged with enforcing the fire code and investigating the cause of fires. In addition to the name changes, the mission of the department has been updated, and some other provisions have been “cleaned up.”
